The now retired general had become president of Columbia University and in that role was to present a distinguished service award in geology. Since Herbert Hoover was one of the foremost geologists of his generation, it was logical for Eisenhower to extend an invitation to Hoover to join in the presentation. Eisenhower makes reference to John Casper Branner, who was Hoover’s advisor and mentor at the Stanford University.
