The scope for improving yield and winter-hardiness by selection within our indigeneous ryegrass material seems to be rather limited. 50 Systematic breeding efforts to broaden the genetic basis for developing Norwegian cultivars has been carried out only for the last 10 years. Some of the results of two breeding projects, in which different Norwegian breeding populations of ryegrass were compared to foreign ryegrass cultivars and populations under different climatic conditions in South-Norway, will be presented.
The collected ecotypes were planted in a spaced planted nursery for evaluation. l. which is characterized by an exceptionally long snow cover. The following characters were assessed: Spring vigour, vigour at cutting time, regrowth, rust resistance, winter hardiness, persistency. The proportion ofoutstanding accessions according to their general appearance was in perennial rygrass 4%, Kentucky bluegrass and orchardgrass 15%, respectively, and in meadow fescue 10%. g. Kentucky bluegrass in counties Miesbach, Rosenheim, Traunstein; orchardgrass in counties Freising and Allgliu; meadow fescue in counties Rosenheim and Freising.
