The profile of the leader indicated by the research reported is that of a self-confident, well-integrated, emotionally stable individual; one who has a desire to lead and is willing, able and competent in a particular situation; who is identified with the norms, values, and goals of the group of which he is the leader; who is a warm, sensitive, and sympathetic person, and able to help members in a practical way; who is intelligent relative to other group members; and who is consistent in performing his leadership functions.
As a quite different example, members of an "authoritarian" organisation happily identified with doing one's duty to the State may be much respected for their personal "ban the bomb" views; they may also be expert in the activities ofthat organisation and furthermore much esteemed as wise and able administrators, but they are not likely to be elected to national office—their kind of leadership does not fit that situation. What then is the importance of personality traits? Clearly they cannot be ruled out.
A considerable delegation, which has great advantages for all concerned, calls for highly effective co-ordination, for example LEADERSHIP UNDER SCRUTINY 49 in terms of clearly defined common ground on which each particular subhead can work out his own action towards common goals. Such an executive must also be able to analyse and initiate, in terms, for example, of ideas and practical aid, provided he does not thereby confuse the area of freedom accorded to subordinates.
